Overview

This course will help you consider all variables for planning and executing a capital campaign. You will examine timelines (how long will a capital campaign take, from planning to ribbon cutting?), understand the importance of conducting a feasibility study (what is the viable donor base for our campaign?), perform an internal audit of fundraising programs (do we have – both inside and outside of the Development department – strong, appropriate systems and the right people in place to manage a successful capital campaign?), and be guided on building a strong and diverse campaign team of staff and volunteers (what will be everyone’s responsibilities?). The course will explore the importance and content of construction budgets (how do we develop a working estimate, and then how do we refine that to a definite figure?) and donor recognition structures (how will we handle naming opportunities, sponsorships, and other ways to recognize donors?), and assess the campaign’s ability to demonstrate connection to mission (how does the result of our capital campaign add to the organization’s impact?).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop a realistic timeline for your capital campaign.
  • Assess your organization’s readiness for a capital campaign by determining the viable donor base for your campaign and evaluating your systems and processes.
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of staff, board, contractors, ambassadors, and other volunteers in your campaign.

Audience

  • Executive Directors/CEOs
  • Development Directors/officers/VPs
  • Other development support staff
  • Board finance, fundraising, facilities, and capital-campaign committee chairs
