From the beginning, nonprofits were formed to protect, preserve, uplift, and serve. That mission hasn’t changed. And despite the challenges ahead, neither will our resolve. What lies before us is daunting – but so is the work we were built to do. Nonprofits have always stepped up when others step back. We are called to rise in times of crisis, to create hope in scarcity, and to lead when the way forward is unclear. It’s this combination of grit, grace, and service that defines our sector.
Now, upon the passage of the federal budget bill, we enter a new and uncertain chapter. The needs of our communities – already immense – are poised to grow even further in both scale and complexity. At the same time, we are confronting the erosion of critical resources, mounting policy constraints, rising demand, and declining organizational capacity. Navigating this terrain will require every bit of strategy, stamina, and solidarity we can summon – at a time when many of us are understandably tired and disenchanted with broken systems, unstable funding, and the relentlessness of doing more with less.
So, let’s take a moment to breathe – to acknowledge where we are, what we face, and how it feels. Then, with clear eyes and steady resolve, we must gather our collective strength and step forward – together – into this new and uncertain chapter. The systems that shape our future are being redesigned in real time, and we must be at the table. That means rallying around shared priorities, bringing our most innovative thinking to bear, and forging redefined partnerships with local and state leaders. The path ahead will be challenging, but it is also a call to action – and we must answer it.
