Member Event Series | Board Bites

To further your knowledge of nonprofit board service, GCN Consulting is proud to launch Board Bites for 2021: one-hour workshops concerning nonprofit board governance issues, designed for board members and the staff who work with them, and all free for GCN members.

Covering a different topic every month, we will maintain a focus on board roles and responsibilities before taking a deeper dive into one or more related issues (see the schedule below) through a facilitated discussion.

Bring your questions, comments, and ideas, and be ready to share and learn from each other.

Boards and Fundraising
All board members must contribute to the nonprofit in terms of time, talent, and treasure. To ensure the board is where it needs to be in raising funds – that is, 100 percent participation – we’ll review board policies and practices that get boards contributing, including three levels of board giving and how to engage members in them. We will also cover peer to peer fundraising, helping board members understand this essential practice and how every one of them – not just the few with “connections” – can ask friends to contribute.

Board Finances
Learn to read a nonprofit financial statement, navigate the budgeting process, understand IRS requirements for 990s and audits, and what you should be looking for in financial statements at every meeting (or at least quarterly) in this look at all things financial for nonprofit boards. If nonprofit finances leave you dizzy or deflated, join us to hear about your fiduciary role and its importance to your work as a board member.
