As President and CEO of GCN, Karen Beavor oversees a professional association representing Georgia’s nonprofit industry, serving more than 5,000 organizations per year, as well as national social enterprise Work for Good and GAgives on GivingTuesday, which has raised nearly $200 million for Georgia nonprofits since its inception in 2012.
Prior to her work at GCN, Karen was the ED of a nonprofit law firm serving people confronted with poverty. Karen is a six-time member of Georgia Trend’s yearly “Georgia’s 100 Most Influential Leaders,” was ranked among the Atlanta Business Chronicle 50 Influential Nonprofit Leaders, and has received both the Martin Luther King Leadership Award for Peace and Justice and the Harvard Business School Club of Atlanta’s Community Leader Award.
Cassady V. “Cass” Brewer is a professor of law at Georgia State University specializing in Nonprofit Organizations, Taxation of Business Organizations, and the Law of Social Enterprise. Brewer co-founded and served as co-chair of the Nonprofit Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia. He has also assisted in drafting and amending the Georgia Limited Liability Company and Limited Liability Partnership Acts.
Brewer currently serves as the reporter for the Legislative Proposals Committee of the Nonprofit Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia. Prior to joining GSU Law School, Brewer was a partner and practice leader in the Tax Group of Morris, Manning & Martin in Atlanta.
Rachel Epps Spears has been Executive Director of Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta since its founding in 2005. Spears is a former Chair of the State Bar of Georgia Nonprofit Law Section and is a member of the Public Interest Executive Roundtable of the Atlanta Bar Association.
Spears has been recognized for her work by Georgia Trend Magazine and the Daily Report, and received Emory University School of Law’s EPIC Inspiration Award for Unsung Devotion to Those Most in Need, as well as the Atlanta Bar Association’s Rita A. Sheffey Public Interest Award.
As a multilingual public relations professional with more than 25 years of experience, Joel Staley is an expert crisis communications counselor and media trainer. Staley has trained C-suite executives and brand spokespersons in effective media interviews, public speeches, and sales presentations.
Before founding his own firm, Staley worked as SVP of Brand & External Communications for Seacoast Bank, as a PR Director for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, and as an account leader for global public relations firms Edelman and Burson. Among other honors, Staley received a 2016 PRSA Florida Radiance Award for crisis communications and a 2021 Marine Marketers of America Neptune Award for public relations.
