Achievements

> At their Root Ball in May, Trees Atlanta announced a new logo and tagline – the first time it has been changed in its 33-year history. The 5th annual fundraiser raised more than $206,000 to support their tree planting and education programs.

At their signature fundraiser, the 17th Annual Pink Affair, TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation hosted a record crowd of nearly 500, and raised nearly $300,000. In addition, the three school-aged sisters who organized the 2nd Annual Strides for Survivors walk raised $10,000.

The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta won a grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta’s Innovation Fund to support their Intown Shabbat Project, offering free Shabbat dinners to engage young Atlanta families and build community.

Piedmont Park Conservancy’s annual Landmark Luncheon enjoyed record turnout, counting over 750 attendees and raising over $360,000. The Atlanta Track Club was honored at the event with the Conservancy’s Legacy Award, in recognition of its commitment to creating an active and healthy city.

At its May 8 dinner, held at the Georgia Aquarium, the Atlanta Jewish Committee raised more than $1.2 million.

At their annual A Magical Evening of Literacy gala, Share the Magic Foundation raised $200,000 to support their Read with Malcolm literacy programs.

> Susan. G. Komen Greater Atlanta raised more than $834,000 through their inaugural Be More Than Pink Walk, a pilot program that’s replaced the 25-year-old Race for the Cure in four test markets.

The Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation received two new grants: a $52,600 challenge grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, to go toward the opening of a new office in Savannah; and a $100,000 grant from the Dobbs Foundation, to support the purchase of new eyeglass lens-production equipment.

Covenant House Georgia raised over $1 million at their 7th annual A Night of Broadway Stars Gala.

Georgians for a Healthy Future celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year, while launching a new strategic plan for 2018-2020.

Bearings Bike Shop received a $300,000 grant from the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation in support of its capital campaign.

Childspring International recently earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the independent evaluator’s highest distinction. Childspring also received a grant of $50,000 from The Waterfall Foundation to support their scholarship program.

The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation’s Safe and Stable Homes team was honored with two awards: the Freedom Righter Cup from Metro Fair Housing Services, recognizing the team’s commitment to defending the rights of low-income Atlantans; and the Outstanding Mountain Award / Partner of the Year honor from the Barack and Michelle Obama Academy, for their work on behalf of the Academy’s students and families.

FurKids received $2,250 from the inaugural Rock for Rescues music festival fundraiser, organized by the City of Milton in partnership with the Vox Atrium Foundation.

CHRIS 180 received the 2018 Apex Nonprofit Organization of the Year award from the Dekalb Chamber of Commerce.

 

Impact

> Camp Twin Lakes will host 37 camp groups, including a record 3,800 campers, during their 10-week summer camp season this year for children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other life challenges. Camp Twin Lakes will also welcome its first four-legged camper, “Bijou,” the golden retriever therapy dog.

Covenant Care Adoption welcomed a record number of attendees, age 20 to 72, to their semiannual Birthmother Retreat in Savannah, a free-to-attend gathering for women who have placed their children for adoption, providing empowerment, support, community, and respite.

In May, Alternate ROOTS launched Creating Place: The Art of Equitable Community Building, a multimedia project created by ROOTS members, artist-activists of the South, collecting “explorations, reflections, challenges, and offerings to the national dialogue around creative placemaking.”

The total area protected by the Southern Conservation Trust doubled in 2017, now including more than 16,000 acres in Georgia and Tennessee.

The Home Depot Foundation announced a $6.3 million commitment to rehabilitating Atlanta’s Westside neighborhoods. Team Depot volunteers celebrated the announcement with a work day in Vine City, where they repaired homes, cleaned and replanted in Vine City Park, and more.

> Through its 17th Annual Essentials Drive, HomeAid Atlanta collected approximately 200,000 essential baby care items, valued at nearly $35,000, making it their most successful Essentials Drive ever. Hundreds of individuals and more than 40 Atlanta businesses and organizations took part, including State Bank & Trust and SunTrust; among the 25 metro-area nonprofits benefiting were Atlanta Mission, Decatur Cooperative Ministry, The Drake House, Nicholas House, Rainbow Village, and Sheltering Arms.

While celebrating its 12th year, The Drake House is expanding its reach by doubling the capacity of The Drake Village Program, from 16 to 32 housing units, through a partnership with HomeAid Atlanta.

Wells Fargo is on track to fulfill its pledge to donate $400 million to nonprofits in 2018, which includes their generous support of GCN through Nonprofit University scholarships.

> The Frazer Center and Atlanta Ballet launched their new partnership in May, when 12 of the Center's clients gathered for a class at the Ballet's Centre for Dance Education. Supported by a Collaborative Innovation Grant from The Home Depot Foundation (awarded through the Building Community Network, a collaborative effort with GCN), the partnership offers adults with developmental disabilities the chance to attend twice-weekly dance classes, volunteer with Ballet's costume shop, and more opportunities yet to be announced.

 

People

Wholesome Wave Georgia welcomes new Executive Director Denise Blake. Blake replaces Sara Berney, who is stepping down after five years in the role to continue her education.

Newly joining the staff at the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta: VP Donors Services Yisrael Frenkel; Jewish Abilities Alliance Manager Annie Garrett; VP of Major Gifts Marsha F. Hurwitz; VP of Innovation Jori Mendel; and Director of Human Resources Jeanette Park. In addition, outgoing Board Chair Joel Marks was succeeded by Mark Silberman.

Covenant House Georgia welcomes new board members David Edmiston and Jennifer Hightower.

The Latin American Association has brought on Victoria Hopkins to serve as their new communications manager.

Communities in Schools of Atlanta has added Kristina Christy, VP of Atlanta and North Georgia Affairs at Wells Fargo, to its board of directors.

Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities named Melinda Kelleher as their first-ever vice president of development.

Welcoming America recently named Leyla Compani to the role of chief development officer for the national organization, headquartered in Decatur.

Joining the board at Alliance Francaise d’Atlanta are new Board President Latif Oduola-Owoo and Treasurer Caroline Freeman, plus Sarran Diegna, Abby Turano, Philippe Grosbois, and Regine Reynolds Cornell.

Drew Meyer is the new vice president, administration at Action Ministries.

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia elected four new board members: LaSharn Hughes, Julie Zaharatos, Lori Wilson, and Maria Henriquez.

Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta welcomes new board members Milton Little, Sheila Weidman-Farley, Harlan Clark, and Natalia Franco.

Junior Achievement of Georgia has tapped Camille Russo to serve as its executive director of statewide development.

The Latin American Association welcomes Rachel Stanley as their new grants manager.

Ted Turner, founder of Turner Broadcasting and CNN, was honored by the Georgia Historical Society with a new historical marker at CNN headquarters in Atlanta, commemorating the news network’s cultural, economic, and social impact on Georgia and the U.S.

 

GCN Highlights

> The High Potential Diverse Leaders (HPDL) class of 2018 is underway: Following the opening session on May 17, the cohort of 38 nonprofit professionals will meet once a month, through October, to develop the skills and networks they’ll need to lead the future of the sector. HPDL, now in its ninth year, is presented in partnership with the American Express Foundation and MailChimp.

With support from the SunTrust Foundation, along with Mutual of America and Marsh & McClennan Agency, GCN is preparing for the July launch of a brand-new financial literacy and wellness initiative for nonprofit professionals, called Mission:Money.

Nonprofit University kicked off a 3-month custom training program at the Latin American Association offices, featuring group training and individual coaching for its development department in six key areas identified by department staff.

The new, five-part Certificate of Nonprofit Social Media training series, launched by Nonprofit University in April, welcomed a full house for courses in planning, best practices, advertising, and analytics.

GCN’s Nonprofit Consulting Group launched a strategic plan for the Georgia Micro Enterprise Network with a board retreat to look at opportunities for shaping the future of the organization. There, the board reached consensus about a model for growing the organization and its footprint.

Multi-Agency Alliance for Children engaged the Consulting Group to review its outcomes, develop a dashboard based on its theory of change, and create a return-on-investment model to explain its impact on children in the foster care system.

The Consulting Group is completing a feasibility study with Kate’s Club for an idea that was generated at a board retreat and was a focus of their last strategic plan, seeking to detail the market involved, the cost of entry, and financial projections related to the idea.

GCN’s Nonprofit University is designing a series of fundraising classes for nonprofits in partnership with Pike County Family Connection and Upson County Family Connection. Held quarterly, the four series will be open to nonprofits seeking to improve their fundraising efforts.

GCN's EVP, Programs and Senior Consultant Kathy Keeley provided a keynote opening address for the annual Not-for-Profit Conference of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants, covering issues currently facing nonprofits in areas like change management and funding.

The Consulting Group completed market research on the Metro Atlanta area for a new collaboration technology firm, which included gathering data on key emerging collaborations and issues.

> Vice President, Marketing & Communications Betsy Reid joined 70 #GivingTuesday community campaign leaders from around the U.S. for the second annual Community Leaders Summit, where they exchanged ideas and best practices to support nonprofits and inspire giving for this year’s event on Nov. 27. GCN President & CEO Karen Beavor sent out a call-to-action policy alert regarding a new attempt by the U.S. House of Representatives to weaken enforcement of the Johnson Amendment, which has kept politics out of nonprofits since 1954.

GCN’s national job board and hiring resource Work for Good released a new report, The nonprofit workforce speaks: How to attract, engage, and retain top mission-driven talent, based on our national survey of nonprofit professionals. Download the ebook here and RSVP for the June 26 webinar here.

> In May, GCN Senior Consultant Elizabeth Runkle presented at the Georgia Water Coalition meeting in Macon, discussing foundation and crowdsourcing fundraising strategies; and provided “Marketing Tools You Can Use” for 25 nonprofits in Moultrie. In June, Elizabeth led more than 35 affiliates of the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation in a grant-writing workshop as part of the Foundation’s annual conference.

In July, Elizabeth Runkle will be transitioning from GCN’s Brunswick office to Atlanta. The search for a new coastal manager is already underway; in the interim, Elizabeth will continue to work with coastal clients to complete projects in progress. Over the last five years, she has helped grow GCN’s coastal membership to 65 organizations; reached more than 200 area nonprofits through learning and networking opportunities; launched and facilitated regional collaborative efforts like the annual Funder Roundtable; and much more.
